Susan A Frazer, General Manager Engineering Employers' Association Group Training Scheme Sue Frazer is the General Manager of the Engineering Employers Association Group Training Scheme in South Australia. Engineering Employers Association Group Scheme is based in South Australia and has been operating since 1981 employing apprentices for host companies in the manufacturing and engineering sector. Sue has over 30 years of experience in the vocational education and training sector in Australia and has worked in the training sector both in government and more recently in private enterprise.
In 2007, Sue teamed up with Barb McPherson Managing Director of River Murray Training and Peter Dawson, CEO of SAGE Didactic for an Australian Flexible Learning Framework grant to develop an e-learning demonstration for the competitive manufacturing sector and in particular Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Manufacturing Intelligence (MI). Sue got involved in the e-learning demonstration because she saw the potential for new and existing workers in the industry to access training wherever and whenever it was convenient for them. This model has the capacity to dramatically change the training sector and to assist manufacturing companies to be much more competitive in a global market.
Session Overview - Case study, how to & skills based Sue will provide an overview of the e-learning demonstration which focuses on a simulated company called No-Waste Ltd . The demonstration is designed around SAGE Didactic’s HAS 200 – a highly automated system (HAS) mini-factory. The demonstration is being used by SAGE to introduce employees and customers to the concept of SCADA and MIS. Seed funding was received from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework for the demonstration which was recently released. The demonstration was developed in response to the looming skill shortages in advanced automation technologies. SCADA and MI are in demand in a wide range of industries including automotive, food processing, water, mining, pulp and paper, furnishing and in the management of infrastructure such as airports and high rise building. The demonstration comprises 6 tutorials focusing on skill development for production roles from Operator, Supervisor and Manager and contributes to learning outcomes from the MCM 04 Competitive Manufacturing Training Package:
MCM T261A – Use SCADA systems in manufacturing MCM T461A – Facilitate systems in manufacturing team or work area MCM T660A – Develop the application of enterprise systems in manufacturing
Sue’s Board of Management and some of her apprentices recently had a tour of the facilities and were briefed on the demonstration. It has great appeal for companies and individuals because of the flexibility and seems to tune in to the Gen Y’s learning styles. The demonstration is available from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework website.
Key Outcomes - Overview of the No-Waster Ltd company simulation that facilitates development of skills in SCADA and MI through 6 tutorials - Participants will gain an understanding of the e-learning exemplar and how they can customize it to their own company needs - Implications of the e-learning demonstration for skills development of production staff from operators, supervisors to managers. Key Competencies - Design learning that adds value - Create learning leaders - Deliver on-demand learning - Create passionate learners - Evaluate training results - Overcome a limited budget |
